Small Animals

Small Animal Clinic

The small animal clinic at Castlelands-Hourihane's Veterinary Clinic is equipped to accommodate a wide variety of small animals from dogs and cats of all breeds and sizes, to more exotic species, including rabbits and ferrets.

We use a wide range of diagnostic techniques, including X-ray examination, ultrasound scanning, and in-house haematology testing, with access to further external laboratory testing.

Vaccinations

Vaccinations are essential to your pets well being. They are an important, effective and simple preventative measure that we can provide for your pet to keep him/her safe and healthy.

We recommend that puppies start their vaccination protocol (DHPPi & Leptospirosis) from the age of six weeks onward, and kittens at the age of nine weeks (Feline Panleukopenia, Herpes Virus and Calicivirus).
Your pet must first receive his/her primary vaccines and boosters, and then should receive a booster vaccine annually thereafter.

Rabies vaccinations are also available, and are mandatory for any animals travelling in or out of Ireland. Kennel Cough vaccines are recommended if your dog is very social with other dogs, and especially in regards to showing, kenneling and grooming.

Not only do these vaccinations protect your pet against illness, they will also keep you and your family safe from any disease that can be transmissible to humans.

Parasite Control

Parasite control is an integral part of routine pet health care, and is important for both your pet and your family.

It is important to note that some parasites can be passed on to humans from their pets.

There are two classes of parasites; internal parasites (or endoparasites) such as roundworms, heartworm and lungworm, and external parasites (or ectoparasites) such as fleas, ticks and lice.

There is a wide range of medications available at Castlelands-Hourihane's Veterinary Clinic to treat parasitic infestations of small animals.

If you have any questions relating to parasite control of your pets, do not hesitate to call in to speak with one of the members of our team for advice.

Microchipping

Here at the clinic we provide a micro-chipping service for both dogs (mandatory) and cats (optional).

As of the 31st March 2016, all dogs and puppies by law have to be microchipped and registered with a recognised database.

Puppies have to be microchipped before they leave the place of birth and/or before they are 12 weeks of age.

It is important to note that microchipping your pet can greatly improve your chances of being re-united should your pet ever get lost or stolen.

Neutering

Neutering services are provided regularly by appointment at the clinic for small animals.

Neutering your cat or dog has many health benefits, for example, the procedure can greatly reduce the risk of reproductive illnesses and associated cancers.

It can also help to prevent male dogs and cats from displaying territorial behaviours, and roaming looking for mates.

This procedure is usually carried out once the animal has reached sexual maturity. This can vary dependent on the species and breed, but is usually done between 4-6 months for cats/kittens, and usually between 6-9 months for dogs/puppies.
